Dodge Durango Recall: 13,330 SUVs Can Lose Their Tail Lights

Dodge’s newest Durango has a tail light problem. A Dodge Durango recall filed with NHTSA on October 22, 2026, covers 13,330 2026 Durango SUVs built between January 5 and February 20, 2026, because bent terminals in the tail light wiring can leave the lamps dark. The fix is free, but owner letters won’t arrive until December, so if you drive one of these SUVs, check your own lights this week.

Quick answer: FCA US is recalling 13,330 2026 Dodge Durango SUVs built from January 5 to February 20, 2026, under NHTSA campaign 26V701 and Chrysler recall number A2D. Damaged terminals in the tail light wiring harness can make the lamps fail. Dealers will inspect the assemblies and replace them free, with owner letters due December 3, 2026.

Which SUVs are in the Dodge Durango recall?

Only 2026 models from a narrow build window. FCA’s Part 573 safety recall report says the suspect period ran from January 5 to February 20, 2026. Durangos built before or after those dates aren’t included.

The parts are taillamp assemblies 68272126AC and 68272127AC from supplier Ventra Greenwich Holdings Corp. of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

FCA estimates only 3% of the 13,330 SUVs carry the defect. By our math that’s roughly 400 Durangos. Nobody can tell which 400 without pulling the lamps, so every SUV in the Dodge Durango recall gets called in.

Why do the tail lights fail?

A terminal is the small metal contact inside a wiring connector, and it must hold exact dimensions to press firmly against its mate. FCA says some have bent terminals, so the circuit may not close and the lamp stays dark.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 requires working turn signals, taillamps, stop lamps and backup lamps. A dark rear lamp gives the driver behind you less warning when you brake or turn. The replacement part is a taillamp “produced with terminals with the correct dimensions,” per FCA, which points to a manufacturing tolerance slip on that batch rather than a design flaw in the lamp itself.

Take this part seriously: FCA’s report lists no warning sign. You won’t get a dash message when a rear lamp is out.

How do you check if your Durango is affected?

Run your 17-digit VIN on NHTSA’s recall page for campaign 26V701. FCA said VINs would become searchable on October 29, 2026, the same day it planned to notify dealers. Owner letters are due from December 3, 2026. USA Today’s October 28, 2026 report said December 4; we’re using the NHTSA filing’s date.

Or call Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and quote recall A2D.

Don’t wait for the letter. With the engine running, have someone stand behind the SUV while you press the brake, flick both turn signals and select reverse. Alone after dark, back toward a garage door and watch the reflection in your mirrors.

Is this the same as Dodge’s 2018–2024 taillamp warranty extension?

No, and mixing them up could cost you money. On October 21, 2026, Dodge extended warranty coverage for the liftgate taillamp on certain 2018–2024 Durangos whose LEDs won’t light or only partly light. Coverage runs five years with unlimited miles from the in-service date, or six months from notification for older SUVs.

That’s a warranty program, not a safety recall. If your liftgate lamp works, Dodge says no repair is needed. If you already paid for that fix, you may claim a refund through fcarecallreimbursement.com.

One gap stands out. Neither notice names the 2025 model year, so a 2025 owner with a flickering racetrack lamp relies on the regular factory warranty.

Should this change your mind about buying a Durango?

Not by itself. Dodge says Durango retail sales rose 18% in the third quarter of 2026 versus a year earlier. A 3% defect estimate on about seven weeks of production is a supplier quality miss with a simple parts swap as the fix.

Buy the Durango if it fits your needs. The R/T and Hellcat models are now sold nationwide. Just make a completed A2D repair a condition of sale on any 2026 truck built January 5 to February 20. Rear hardware faults aren’t unique to Dodge: see our Range Rover rearview camera recall report.

One limitation: FCA’s 3% figure is its own estimate, and recall schedules can slip. We’ll update this Dodge Durango recall story if the numbers change.

Dodge Durango tail light recall FAQ

How do I know if my 2026 Dodge Durango is part of the recall?

Enter your 17-digit VIN on NHTSA’s recall lookup or call Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and ask about recall A2D. Only 2026 Durangos built from January 5 to February 20, 2026 are included. FCA said VINs became searchable on October 29, 2026, and owner letters are due from December 3.

Will Dodge pay for tail light repairs on an older Durango?

For certain 2018–2024 Durangos, yes. Dodge extended liftgate taillamp coverage on October 21, 2026, to five years with unlimited miles, or six months from notification for older SUVs. Owners who already paid for that repair may qualify for reimbursement through fcarecallreimbursement.com. The 2025 model year isn’t named in either program.

Is it safe to drive a Durango covered by the tail light recall?

FCA hasn’t issued a park-it or do-not-drive warning. The risk is that a rear lamp stops working without any dash alert, so drivers behind you may miss your brake or turn signal. Check your lamps with a helper now and book the free dealer inspection once your VIN shows the open recall.

The Dodge Durango recall names 13,330 SUVs, but FCA expects the fault in about 1 in 33 of them. Two minutes behind your Durango with a friend will tell you more than a December letter.
