Water can pool behind the rearview camera on 93,997 Land Rover Range Rovers in the US, and Land Rover now says its tailgate drain holes are too small to stop it. The Range Rover recall, filed with NHTSA on October 15, 2026 and made public on October 23, covers 2022–2026 Range Rovers built at Solihull between July 8, 2021 and June 4, 2026.
Treat it as a design flaw with a paper trail: it’s at least the third JLR rear camera water recall since 2024, and you want the fix done before your camera goes dark.
Quick answer: Land Rover is recalling 93,997 2022–2026 Range Rover SUVs (NHTSA 26V678, Land Rover D171) because water can collect around the rearview camera and damage it. The screen can then show a blurred or blank image. Dealers will drill extra drain holes in the tailgate trim and replace damaged cameras for free. Owner letters go out by December 11, 2026.

What goes wrong with the Range Rover’s rear camera?
The camera lives in a trim piece on the tailgate. According to Land Rover’s Part 573 safety recall report, the tailgate’s water management can’t drain that housing fast enough, so water pools around the camera. Over months it gets inside, and the touchscreen shows a distorted picture or nothing at all.
Land Rover lists the estimated defect rate as 100%, because every truck has the same drain design. Actual failures are far fewer: JLR logged 2,295 US claims and field reports for camera replacements between August 3, 2022 and September 28, 2026, which works out to about 2.4% of the recalled fleet. Land Rover reports no crashes or injuries tied to it.
How did Land Rover find the problem?
JLR opened an investigation on July 31, 2026 after warranty data showed more Range Rover camera replacements in the US and Canada than in other markets. Its safety committee cited a recent Discovery camera recall, campaign D145, and on October 6 supplier analysis of returned cameras showed most had failed from water ingress.
Read that 2.4% with care. In September, JLR began requiring evidence before approving a camera swap, and claims dropped sharply. Our read: some earlier replacements weren’t true failures, so the genuine failure rate is probably lower.
Which vehicles does the Range Rover recall cover?
Only the full-size Range Rover, model years 2022–2026, built from July 8, 2021 through June 4, 2026. NHTSA’s product list for campaign 26V678 names no Range Rover Sport, Velar or Evoque. Land Rover added a revised seal to the camera’s tailgate trim on June 4, 2026, so trucks built after that date shouldn’t need the work.
Check the build month on the driver’s door-jamb label, then run your VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup or Land Rover’s own VIN search. Dealers won’t be notified until October 29, 2026.
The Range Rover Sport had its own version: in May 2024, Land Rover recalled about 22,268 2018–2022 models with the Surround Camera System under NHTSA 24V364 for water entering the rearview camera.
What will the dealer do, and will you pay anything?
A technician drills extra drain holes in the underside of the tailgate bezel, checks the camera and replaces it if it’s damaged. There’s no charge, and this isn’t a do-not-drive or park-outside recall.
Interim letters warning owners of the risk are due by December 11, 2026, and NHTSA’s summary says a second letter will follow once the final remedy is available, so the repair may not be bookable on day one.
The mistake owners make is tossing the invoice. The filing says JLR is using its general reimbursement plan, so if you already paid out of pocket for a replacement camera, keep that receipt and ask your dealer about a refund once the campaign opens.

Should you buy a used 2022–2025 Range Rover now?
You can, with two checks. Ask for proof that campaign D171 is done or scheduled. Then check the reverse camera after a wash for fogging or flicker. A camera that already shows moisture qualifies for replacement, but get that in writing before you sign.
Until the work is done, use the parking sensors and walk around before reversing. Trapped water means a camera that works on a dry afternoon can blank out after a storm.

Range Rover recall FAQ
Is my Range Rover part of the rearview camera recall?
It is if it’s a 2022–2026 full-size Range Rover built at Solihull between July 8, 2021 and June 4, 2026. Enter your 17-digit VIN at NHTSA’s recall site or Land Rover USA’s recall search. Results may lag until dealers are notified on October 29, 2026, so check again in November if it shows nothing.
Is it safe to drive a Range Rover under recall 26V678?
Yes. Land Rover hasn’t issued a do-not-drive or park-outside warning, and it reports no crashes or injuries linked to the defect. The risk is a blurred or missing rear camera image, so rely on your mirrors, parking sensors and a walk-around before backing up until a dealer completes the free repair.
Will Land Rover pay me back for a camera I already replaced?
Possibly. Land Rover’s filing with NHTSA says it is using its general reimbursement plan on file, which covers owners who paid for a repair the recall now fixes. Keep your original invoice showing the camera replacement, the date and your VIN, and ask your Land Rover dealer or customer service at 800-637-6837.
The fix is a few drilled holes and a camera check. Skipping it means a screen that can go dark the first time you reverse toward a bike after a rainstorm, so book the Range Rover recall visit as soon as your letter arrives, and bring any old camera invoice.
