6.7 Cummins Horsepower by Year, Best Years and the 2027 Changes

The 6.7 Cummins made 350 hp when it arrived in Dodge Ram pickups for 2007.5. The version in a 2027 Ram 2500 makes 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft, and it’s now the only diesel Ram sells. If you’re shopping used, the year matters more than the badge: the 2021–2024 trucks are the safest buys, and the 2019–2020 trucks are worth a hard look at their recall history before you pay for one.

Quick answer: The 6.7 Cummins in 2025–2027 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups makes 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft. Earlier trucks ranged from 350 hp and 650 lb-ft (2007.5–2010) to 420 hp and 1,075 lb-ft (2021–2024 Ram 3500 High Output). The 2019–2020 trucks used a Bosch CP4.2 fuel pump that Ram later recalled.

6.7 Cummins horsepower and torque by year

Ram has sold the engine in two tunes for most of its life. The standard output went into the 2500 and into 3500s with the 68RFE six-speed automatic. The High Output (HO) tune was only offered in the Ram 3500 with the heavier-duty Aisin AS69RC automatic. These are the ratings for automatic-transmission pickups:

Model yearsStandard outputHigh Output (3500 with Aisin)
2007.5–2010350 hp, 650 lb-ft–
2011–2012350 hp, 800 lb-ft–
2013–2014370 hp, 800 lb-ft385 hp, 850 lb-ft
2015370 hp, 800 lb-ft385 hp, 865 lb-ft
2016–2017370 hp, 800 lb-ft385 hp, 900 lb-ft
2018370 hp, 800 lb-ft385 hp, 930 lb-ft
2019–2020370 hp, 850 lb-ft400 hp, 1,000 lb-ft
2021–2024370 hp, 850 lb-ft420 hp, 1,075 lb-ft
2025–2027430 hp, 1,075 lb-ft (one rating for every 2500 and 3500 pickup)
Sources: Cummins (2019 and 2021 ratings), Ram/Stellantis (2019, 2025 and 2027), Diesel Hub engine database (2007.5–2018)

The common mistake with that table: a 2021–2024 Ram 2500 makes 370 hp and 850 lb-ft, not 1,075 lb-ft, because the HO tune never went into the 2500 before 2025. Cummins’ own 2021 ratings page lists the 1,075 lb-ft figure for the Ram 3500 with the Aisin only. If a listing for a 2022 Ram 2500 quotes 1,075 lb-ft, the seller is reading the brochure, not the truck.

Which 6.7 Cummins years should you avoid?

The 2019–2020 trucks carry the biggest risk. Cummins redesigned the engine for 2019 with a compacted graphite iron block and swapped the long-running Bosch CP3 injection pump for a Bosch CP4.2. The CP4.2 runs tighter internal clearances to reach higher pressure, and it relies on the fuel itself for lubrication. US ultra-low-sulfur diesel gives it less margin than the CP3 had, and when the pump wears out it sends metal debris through the injectors and fuel rail.

NHTSA opened an investigation into high-pressure fuel pump failures in 2019–2020 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks on Oct. 14, 2021, according to its engineering analysis report EA23-001, which also lists FCA recalls 22V406 and 22V767. Diesel Hub reports that Ram went back to the CP3 for 2021 and retrofitted CP3 pumps to recalled 2019–2020 trucks. Before you buy one of those trucks, run its VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and ask for the dealer invoice showing the pump swap.

The 2007.5–2012 engines have a different weak spot. Before 2013, Ram pickups had no SCR system, so the engine injected extra fuel to burn off the particulate filter, and some of it washed past the rings into the oil. Diesel Hub notes that fuel dilution above 5% between oil changes wasn’t unusual on those trucks. Ask for oil analysis records.

What are the best years for the 6.7 Cummins?

Our pick is a 2021–2024 Ram 3500 with the Aisin automatic. It has the CP3 pump, the stronger 2019-generation block and rods, and the 420-hp HO tune. A 2021–2024 Ram 2500 shares the same hardware with the lower 370-hp tune, which is plenty for a bumper-pull camper. That’s our read of the parts history, not a reliability survey.

The 2025-and-newer engine is the bigger unknown. Cummins said in its Jan. 7, 2025 launch release that it improved the engine’s power and efficiency. Diesel Hub lists a Bosch CP8 pump rated to 39,000 psi, glow plugs in place of the intake grid heater, a cartridge oil filter and a return to a gray-iron block. Sensible changes, with less than two years of owner history behind them.

What changed for the 2027 Ram heavy-duty Cummins?

Not the engine. Ram’s What’s New for 2027 Ram Heavy Duty release keeps the HO Cummins at 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft with the TorqueFlite HD eight-speed. The headline change is the Ram 2500 Power Wagon, which offers the Cummins for the first time. Fleets also get a new 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle.

Ram rates the 2027 2500 with the Cummins at up to 20,000 pounds of towing and 3,990 pounds of payload, both preliminary. On a 2025 Ram 2500 Limited that Car and Driver tested, the diesel was a $12,595 option. Because the 2025, 2026 and 2027 share the same engine and transmission, a discounted leftover 2025 or 2026 gets you the same powertrain as a new 2027.

How does the Cummins compare with Ford’s Power Stroke and GM’s Duramax?

On paper, it’s now third. Ford’s 2027 Super Duty sells only the High-Output 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8, rated at 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft, according to Ford. GM’s current 6.6-liter Duramax makes 470 hp and 975 lb-ft, and Kelley Blue Book reported on Sept. 25, 2026, that GM’s new 8.3-liter Duramax with 555 hp and 1,230 lb-ft reaches dealers late in 2027.

Peak numbers don’t tell you how a truck tows. The Cummins makes its 1,075 lb-ft at 1,800 rpm, and Car and Driver’s 2025 Ram 2500 Limited ran 0–60 mph in 6.3 seconds at 8,480 pounds. If you tow near the limit every week, test-drive both with your own trailer. You can read more on Ford’s diesel shake-up in our story on how the 2027 Ford Super Duty drops its base engines.

What MPG does a Ram 2500 diesel get?

The EPA doesn’t rate heavy-duty pickups, because their gross vehicle weight ratings top 8,500 pounds. The best independent number comes from Car and Driver’s 2025 Ram 2500 Limited test, published Nov. 27, 2025: 22 mpg on its 75-mph highway loop and 15 mpg overall. Car and Driver says that highway figure is 4 mpg better than before, and it works out to about 700 miles per tank.

Towing cuts those numbers, and every diesel Ram since 2013 also needs diesel exhaust fluid for its SCR system. Our new car and truck coverage tracks each 2027 price change, and our story on the Ford and Carhartt Super Duty XLT covers Ford’s newest work-truck edition.

6.7 Cummins questions owners ask

How much horsepower does a 6.7 Cummins have?

The 6.7 Cummins in 2025–2027 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups makes 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft, according to Ram. Earlier trucks made less: 350 hp in 2007.5–2012, 370 hp in standard-output trucks from 2013 to 2024, and up to 420 hp in the 2021–2024 Ram 3500 High Output with the Aisin automatic.

What year 6.7 Cummins should I avoid?

Be careful with 2019–2020 trucks. They used a Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump that can fail and contaminate the whole fuel system. Ram recalled those trucks to fit the older CP3 pump, and NHTSA investigated the failures. Check the VIN on NHTSA’s recall site and ask for proof the pump was replaced.

What is the best year for the 6.7 Cummins?

A 2021–2024 Ram 3500 with the Aisin automatic is our pick for a used truck. It pairs the stronger 2019-generation engine with the proven CP3 pump and the 420-hp High Output tune. The 2025-and-newer engine has more power and a new CP8 pump, but it has less than two years of owner history.

What MPG does a Ram 2500 Cummins get?

The EPA doesn’t rate heavy-duty pickups. Car and Driver measured 22 mpg on its 75-mph highway test and 15 mpg overall in a 2025 Ram 2500 Limited with the Cummins, which gives roughly 700 miles of highway range. Diesel exhaust fluid is an extra running cost, and towing lowers fuel economy further.

The 6.7 Cummins to buy right now

Ram hasn’t touched the 6.7 Cummins for 2027, so when you buy matters more than which year you buy. A 2021–2024 Ram 3500 HO with the CP3 pump is the proven used choice. A leftover 2025 or 2026 Ram 2500 with a dealer discount gives you the same 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft as a 2027 for less.
