2027 Lexus NX Goes Hybrid-Only, PHEV Range Climbs to 45 Miles

Lexus won’t sell you a gas-only NX anymore. The 2027 Lexus NX, revealed in Plano, Texas, on October 20, 2026, comes only as the NX 350h hybrid or the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid, and the plug-in now carries a manufacturer-estimated 45 miles of electric range. Our read: losing the gas engine costs you almost nothing, and the plug-in is the version that just got interesting.

Quick answer: The new NX is sold only as a 244-hp NX 350h hybrid or a 324-hp NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid, in Premium, Premium+, F SPORT and Luxury grades. Lexus estimates 45 miles of electric range for the plug-in and up to 40 mpg combined for the hybrid. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet.

Why dropping the gas NX barely touches your wallet

On Lexus’s August 2025 price sheet, the cheapest NX wasn’t the gas model. The NX 350h FWD started at $45,570, while the gas NX 350 AWD started at $46,220, both including the $1,395 delivery fee. An all-wheel-drive NX 350h cost $47,120, just $900 more than the gas AWD car.

So the gas NX was already the odd one out. If the base price climbs for 2027, that’s the number to watch. The engine count isn’t.

What’s new under the hood of the 2027 Lexus NX?

Both versions use a new e-Axle that packs the transaxle, motor and power control unit into one assembly, plus silicon carbide chips in the inverter, per the 2027 NX press release from Lexus. That means less weight up high and less energy lost as heat.

The NX 350h makes 244 hp combined, 4 hp more than the 2026 car, from a 186-hp 2.5-liter engine, a 160-hp front motor and, on AWD versions, a 54-hp rear motor. Acceleration stays close to last year’s, so what you’ll feel is a smoother pull from a stop, because the software leans on the battery and keeps engine revs from flaring.

The NX 450h+ climbs from 304 hp to 324 hp with a 203-hp front motor. Lexus estimates 40 mpg combined for the NX 350h FWD, 38 mpg for AWD versions and 37 mpg for the 450h+ once its battery is drawn down. Treat every figure as preliminary until the EPA rates the car.

How far can the NX 450h+ go on electricity?

Lexus estimates 45 miles, up from the 2026 model’s 37-mile EPA rating, with 8% more battery capacity. One caution: the same release also says “greater than 40 miles,” and Motor1 reported about 40 on October 20. We’re using the 45-mile figure from Lexus’s own table, but the EPA number could land lower.

A NACS-style port and DC fast charging are now standard. Lexus estimates 2.5 hours from 10% to 100% on a 240V home charger and 35 minutes from 10% to 80% at a 50-kW DC station. If you can’t charge at home, buy the hybrid.

NX 450h+ vs Volvo XC60 and Mercedes GLC plug-ins

Lexus hasn’t priced the 2027 car, so here’s a frame for when it does. The 2026 NX 450h+ Premium cost $59,205. Volvo lists the 2027 XC60 plug-in hybrid from $67,595 with 35 miles of EPA-estimated range, and Mercedes-Benz lists the 2027 GLC 350e 4MATIC from $62,700 with 54 miles.

Divide price by electric miles and you get a rough cost per mile of range: about $1,931 for the Volvo, $1,161 for the Mercedes and $1,600 for the 2026 Lexus. If the 2027 NX 450h+ holds its 2026 price with 45 miles, it drops to about $1,316. That’s our arithmetic, and Mercedes doesn’t say on that page whether its price includes destination.

Which Lexus NX hybrid trim should you wait for?

Front-wheel drive is offered only on the NX 350h Premium and Premium+, and every 450h+ is AWD. If you live in the Sun Belt and want the cheapest NX, you’re shopping a Premium FWD. For context on the wider family, see Toyota’s 2025 hybrids and SUVs.

The trim trap is the suspension. Adaptive Variable Suspension is exclusive to F SPORT, yet the 17-speaker Mark Levinson system is standard only on Luxury and costs extra on F SPORT. If you want both, you’re paying for an option a Luxury buyer gets included. The 14-inch touchscreen and Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 are standard on every grade.

Lexus NX FAQ

When does the new Lexus NX go on sale?

Lexus hasn’t given a U.S. on-sale date yet. Its October 20, 2026 release says the updated NX is expected in global markets by the end of 2026, with pricing and full grade details coming closer to launch. The NX 350h is built in Ontario and Kyushu, and the NX 450h+ only in Kyushu, Japan.

Is the 2027 Lexus NX only available as a hybrid?

Yes. For 2027 Lexus drops the gas-only NX 350 and sells two electrified versions: the NX 350h hybrid with 244 hp and the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid with 324 hp. Both come in Premium, Premium+, F SPORT and Luxury grades, and front-wheel drive is limited to the NX 350h Premium and Premium+.

How much electric range does the 2027 NX 450h+ have?

Lexus estimates 45 miles of all-electric range for every 2027 NX 450h+ grade, up from the 2026 model’s 37-mile EPA rating. That’s a manufacturer figure, and the official EPA rating comes closer to launch. A 240V home charger refills the battery from 10% to 100% in about 2.5 hours, Lexus says.

The most important number for the 2027 Lexus NX isn’t public yet. Lexus says pricing comes closer to the on-sale date. If the NX 450h+ lands within a few hundred dollars of $59,205, you’d get 8 more electric miles than last year for roughly the same money, and that’s the NX we’d put a deposit on.
