Toyota’s Largest SUV: Sequoia vs Grand Highlander vs Land Cruiser

At 208.1 inches long, the Sequoia is Toyota’s largest SUV, and it’s the only one of the three big Toyotas that can tow more than 6,000 pounds. But it isn’t the one with the most room inside. The Grand Highlander holds 97.5 cubic feet with the seats folded and starts about $24,000 lower, which makes it the better buy for most families who don’t tow.

Quick answer: The Toyota Sequoia is Toyota’s largest SUV by length, wheelbase and width, seats up to eight and tows up to 9,500 pounds. The Grand Highlander is shorter but holds more cargo, 97.5 cubic feet, and costs far less. The Land Cruiser is the tallest of the three but seats only five.

Which is Toyota’s largest SUV?

The Sequoia, by every exterior measure except height. Kelley Blue Book’s July 2025 comparison, using 2025 model-year figures, measured all three. Toyota hasn’t changed the bodies since, so the numbers still hold for 2026.

Height (in)74.570.176.1

Max cargo (cu ft)86.997.582.1

Notice the cargo row. The Sequoia’s body is 6.7 inches longer than the Grand Highlander’s, yet it holds 10.6 fewer cubic feet behind the front seats. That’s the cost of body-on-frame construction: a separate ladder frame raises the floor and eats cubic feet a unibody crossover keeps for cargo.

Sequoia vs Grand Highlander vs Land Cruiser: price and capability

Here’s what you pay and what you get, using the base MSRPs on Toyota.com when we checked. Toyota lists these before its dealer processing and handling fee, so expect the sticker on the lot to be higher.

The last two rows are our math from the base prices and Toyota’s maximum ratings. They show the split clearly. If you haul people and gear, the Grand Highlander gives you each cubic foot for a bit more than half what the Sequoia charges. If you tow, the Sequoia is the cheapest Toyota per pound of trailer.

The towing trap

A common mistake is buying a three-row crossover and then shopping for a camper. The Grand Highlander tops out at 5,000 pounds, and that’s the maximum rating, before you load seven people and luggage. Check the trailer’s loaded weight, its GVWR, not the dry weight in the brochure. If a trailer is anywhere in your plans, the Sequoia’s 9,500-pound rating is the reason to pay its premium.

What does the Sequoia cost to own?

Every Sequoia uses the i-FORCE MAX hybrid V6, so there’s no cheaper gas-only version. The SR5 is rated 21 mpg city and 24 highway on Toyota.com. Step up to the Platinum ($81,735), TRD Pro ($82,465), 1794 Edition ($82,550) or Capstone ($86,135) and the rating drops to 19/22.

Watch the seating spec too. Second-row captain’s chairs drop the Sequoia from eight seats to seven, so check the window sticker if you need the bench. The third row folds and slides on power motors, which helps you trade legroom for cargo space without unloading the car.

Toyota Sequoia vs Chevy Tahoe

The Tahoe is the Sequoia’s most direct rival. GM Authority’s January 8, 2026 price report lists the 2026 Tahoe LS with rear-wheel drive and the 5.3-liter V8 at $63,495, including a $2,795 destination charge.

Compare like with like before you decide. The Sequoia’s $65,725 excludes Toyota’s fees, so the real gap at the base level is several thousand dollars once you add them. You get standard hybrid power and 583 lb-ft of torque in the Toyota. The Tahoe gives you a choice of a 5.3-liter V8, a 3.0-liter diesel or a 6.2-liter V8, which climbs to $86,495 in a four-wheel-drive High Country. What changes on the 2027 Grand Highlander?

Toyota announced the 2027 lineup on October 1, 2026 in a Toyota Newsroom release. It’s a light update rather than a full mid-cycle refresh. Prices start at $42,560 for a front-drive gas LE and $45,910 for the Hybrid LE, both before the dealer fee. That’s $1,200 more than the 2026 LE’s $41,360.

The new Hybrid Woodland Edition gets standard all-wheel drive, all-terrain tires, an extra half inch of ground clearance, a removable second-row cooler and a tow hitch. It seats seven with captain’s chairs. The Hybrid MAX Limited and Hybrid Nightshade Edition drop out for 2027, and XLE models add a heated steering wheel.

Engines carry over: the 2.4-liter turbo gas engine makes 265 hp and the 2.5-liter hybrid makes 245 hp. If you want the 362-hp Hybrid MAX for 2027, it’s only offered in Platinum trim. Toyota builds the Grand Highlander at its plant in Indiana.

Where does the Land Cruiser fit?

It’s the tallest Toyota SUV at 76.1 inches, but it’s a two-row, five-seat vehicle. The 2027 Land Cruiser 1958 starts at $58,180 and the better-equipped Land Cruiser trim at $64,255, with full-time four-wheel drive, a center locking differential and 22/25 mpg ratings.

Buy it for trails, not for carpools. It costs more per cubic foot and per pound of towing than either of the other two. A few limits on this comparison. The dimensions come from KBB’s 2025 figures, Toyota.com pricing changes without notice, and we’ve used maximum towing and cargo ratings, which only apply to specific configurations.
