Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most loved race circuits in the world, with endurance racing having taken place there as early as 1924 for the Spa 24 Hours.In 1963, Spa became part of the FIA World Sportscar Championship with the race running 500 km around the old 14 km circuit until it was deemed too dangerous for modern safety standards. 

The event continued in 1982 around the new 7 km until 1990 as part of the World Sportscar Championship where the race was won by legendary sports cars such as the Porsche 956 and the Sauber C9 Mercedes. 

1999 saw the event return as part of various sports car championships, with the 6 hour race becoming part of the FIA World Endurance Championship during its inaugural season in 2012.
